My hand has finally healed enough to get back to work on the house. I decided to replace the back door today. Which, when the house is done, will be my main entrance into the house, especially in the winter time.
My boy Dan Molloy showed me how to get an old door out quick. 3 cuts with a saws all.
You’ll notice that the entry way isn’t finished. The area behind the door was previously a shed. There was a wall separating the two rooms , which is why there are two doors. The door behind the hot tub is going away. I will eventually turn the space into a mud room. 3rd cut.
If you look at the bottom of the door , you will see a big hole. Always something. The old door had a huge piece of wood, basically a 2 x 8 as the bottom. The new doors don’t work that way.
The old piece of wood was trash
So I cut a new piece, I forgot to take a picture of it. Dan came over to help me move the door, and gave some good advice about how to install the new piece of wood. Between the two of us we are turning into pro door installers.
and there you go. Here is the new piece of wood. I used two pieces of 1 x 8 sandwiched together as opposed to 2 x 8. I don’t know where to get a 2 x 8 that isn’t warped or cupped. So I bought the prime boards. It worked out because the door went right in. I’ve learned the hard way that you need that bottom board to be perfect.
and I forgot to buy a door knob and dead-bolt for the new door.
So, I went and bought one.
Probably won’t get around to removing the other door this year, but I will get the stairs for the hot tub done this week. Assuming I don’t have to make any trips to the E.R.
